It’s October, and you know what that means — pumpkins, sweet treats, and the real start of fall. But did you know it’s also National Dental Hygiene Month? Your dentist in Superior, WI is celebrating by recommending all patients do the Daily 4. That’s brushing, flossing, rinsing, and chewing, or the simple steps you can take to enjoy better tooth and gum health.
#1: Brush like you know you should
You know healthy teeth and gums require regular brushing, but are you really cleaning for two minutes, twice a day (at least)? People who are at an increased risk of tooth decay or gum disease can benefit from more frequent brushing, like after each meal. Using a soft bristled brush and a non-abrasive paste, go over each quadrant of your teeth using gentle circular motions. Brush each section for 30 seconds each. Having a hard time reaching the two minute mark each time? Try setting a timer until you’re used to what two minutes feels like.
#2: Floss gently at least once a day
Flossing shouldn’t be a rapid-fire attack every week or so. Effective flossing is gentle, thorough, and performed at least once a day. Need proof that the habit does something good? Give your used floss a whiff the next time you’ve skipped a few days. It won’t smell pleasant. That’s the bacteria you’re allowing to collect and multiply in your teeth without flossing. So start a flossing habit — and then stick to it.
#3: Use mouthwash for extra cleaning
From whitening to extra fluoride and cavity prevention, mouthwashes come in a variety of formulas. Adding the right one to your dental hygiene routine is a good idea for improved oral health. After all, your teeth are just half of your mouth. There is plenty of room for bacteria and biofilm to collect in other areas, like the roof of the mouth, on the tongue, and between the cheeks and the gums. You and your dentist can discuss which formula may be best for you.
#4: Stock up on sugar free gum
Did you know popping a piece of sugar free gum in your mouth after meals and in the mid-afternoon or mid-morning stimulates saliva flow? And that the more saliva is in your mouth, the cleaner your teeth and gums are? It’s a natural solvent, helping to wash away the food particles and bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Toss a few packets of sugar free gum in your bag or briefcase for fresher breath and a healthier mouth.
