When it comes to caring for your smile, there is a lot to consider. Keeping your mouth healthy goes beyond just having white teeth. Oral health problems are prevalent among both adults and children, but some are more common than others. So, keep reading to equip yourself with the knowledge you need to maintain a bright and healthy smile for years to come.
Cavities
Cavities happen when plaque sticks to teeth and turns sugars from foods and drinks into acids, which can harm teeth over time. Over half of kids ages six to eight have had a cavity in their baby teeth. Additionally, over half of teens 12 to 19 have had a cavity in their adult teeth, and a quarter of adults aged 20 to 64 have cavities that haven’t been treated. More than 90% of adults have had a cavity.
Not brushing well, eating lots of sugary foods, and not getting enough fluoride can make cavities more likely. Cavities can cause pain, tooth loss, and infection if not treated. They are common in kids and adults, but they can be prevented with good oral care habits.
Periodontal (Gum) Disease
Periodontal disease affects the gums and supporting tissues around the teeth. It can cause bleeding or swollen gums, pain, and bad breath. In severe cases, gums may come away from teeth, leading to loose teeth or tooth loss. About 19% of adults worldwide have severe periodontal disease, with poor oral hygiene and tobacco use being the main risk factors.
In 2009–2014, about 4 in 10 adults aged 30 or older had gum diseases. These diseases are caused by infections and inflammation in the gums and bone around the teeth. Chronic conditions like diabetes, weak immune systems, poor oral hygiene, and family history increase the risk. Smoking is also a major risk factor. Without treatment, gum diseases can lead to loose teeth and possibly the need for removal.
Oral Cancer
Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth, lips, and throat and is the 13th most common cancer worldwide. In 2016, there were almost 45,000 new cases of oral cavity and pharynx cancer in the US, with over 10,000 deaths. In 2020, there were about 377,713 new cases and 177,757 deaths from oral cancer.
Additionally, oral cancer is more common in older men and is more deadly in men than women. ng risky behaviors like smoking and excessive alcohol use is crucial in preventing oral cancers. Early detection is important for improving survival rates.
Maintaining good oral health habits and seeking regular dental check-ups are vital steps in preventing and detecting oral health issues such as gum disease, cavities, and oral cancer. By being proactive about oral health, you can safeguard your smile and overall well-being for years to come.
