The answer to this question is not a straightforward yes or no. The result of some research does indicate that this may be a possibility, but more research is still necessary to reach a consensus. However, a recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, adds further credence to the hypothesis that poor oral health can negatively affect those who struggle with cognitive or memory disorders. Simply put, visiting a dentist for regular dental checkups may slow the progress of cognitive decline.
Gum Disease & Overall Health
There are many ways oral health issues can affect the whole body. For instance, an uneven bite can lead to excess strain on the jaw joints that causes TMJ dysfunction, which can lead to headaches, earaches, neck and back pain, and a variety of other issues. However, one of the most direct ways oral health relates to whole body health is gum disease. This chronic health concern negatively impacts immune function, releases plaque into the bloodstream, and can elevate blood pressure. Additionally, patients who have diabetes or other immune suppressing illnesses may experience an increase in symptoms if they also suffer from gum disease.
Regular Dental Checkups Slow Cognitive Decline
More and more, results of scientific research are fairly clear when it comes to determining a link between oral and overall health. However, finding the connection between oral health and specific illnesses like cognitive decline has been more challenging. The results of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society study do continue to provide evidentiary support for this idea. Specifically, oral health issues were dramatically more frequent for patients with cognitive decline, especially dementia. Now, some of this can be attributed to a patient’s decreasing ability to care for the smile, but the frequency of these issues seems to indicate a more direct connection. Currently, the research does not point to a direct, causal relationship between oral health and cognitive decline. However, the research does show that symptoms for patients who suffer from cognitive dysfunction are slowed, if the patient maintains regular dental appointments.
