When considering same-day crowns for your damaged or decayed teeth, you may think you already know everything about these uniquely designed, innovative restorations. The truth, though, is that researchers are learning new things about them and their capabilities every day. When discussing treatment with your dentist, prepare to discover three interesting facts about these crowns that you may have never known before.

Fact #1: There Are No Messy Impressions Required

In the past, lab technicians needed a model of the patient’s mouth to create a custom restoration. While this remains true today, the process of retrieving the model is much different.

Instead of cold, messy dental putty, a dentist can use CEREC technology to scan the mouth so that a digital impression is captured, transforming into a 3D image that is transferred to an in-house milling unit.

With no gag-inducing putty or outside lab taking care of the creation process, it ensures a more comfortable and positive experience for patients.

Fact #2: Same-Day Crowns Only Require 1-2 Hours of Your Time

The decision to receive a same-day crown is often met with much appreciation because of how much time they can save patients.

Traditional crowns require 2-3 visits to a dentist’s office; however, those created in-house with a CEREC milling unit only require you to wait 1-2 hours. Not only does this cut down on your driving time, but it also allows you to walk out with a new and improved smile in just one day.

Fact #3: Same-Day Crowns Do Not Require More Maintenance

When comparing same-day crowns to traditional ones crafted in a lab, you do not need to worry about additional maintenance. Both options require the same amount, so you can feel confident and comfortable knowing that your new tooth only needs a good oral hygiene routine.

Brushing twice each day for two minutes, using fluoride toothpaste, flossing at least once a day, and rinsing with an ADA-approved mouthwash will minimize the chances of dental decay and gum disease. It will also keep your smile looking and feeling healthy in between appointments, as you will need to maintain your six-month checkups and cleanings as well.

With same-day crowns, you can experience a faster form of restorative treatment while receiving the same high-quality results. There’s no need to second-guess your decision, so talk to your dentist today about whether these custom creations are right for you.
